Reel Big Fish Live Review + Concert Photos w/ Suburban Legends & The Maxies | The Orange Peel, Asheville, NC | January 26, 2016

by • March 7, 2016

Winterstorm Jonas left us cold, real cold. We stayed with our parents for a few days to wait out the storm, and to ski and snowboard some fresh powder, before continuing on our yearlong journey. But before we left North Carolina, we had to get warmed up with some Southern California ska music.

Adam and I walked into The Orange Peel, a classic music venue in Asheville, NC, with bellies full of farm fresh burgers. We posted up in the back as the eccentric crowd continued to trickle in from the cold. The lights dimmed and the show began with an odd twist.

The opener, The Maxies, is a band out of Greenland. They’re crazy, wearing crazy outfits, ripping crazy riffs, and playing crazy music about Greenland. See if they’re coming to a town near you — you should see them. They’re crazy. They also give free hugs at the end of their set.

Editors Note: If you haven’t seen what The Brothers Fricke are up to in 2016, a year long trip across the country, check out The Bro’d Trip!

Right after came Suburban Legends. I’m not much of a ska fan, but this is what I like about ska: everyone in sync, a small horn section, and tons of character. Throughout their set, the trumpeter and trombonist would occasionally have a choreographed duel that wowed the crowd. Hands down, Suburban Legends has a terrific stage presence that really can’t be matched.

Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for, Reel Big Fish! They owned the stage and the crowd. For almost two hours, the band serenaded their die hard fans with some oldies and some goodies. The entire crowd was doing the skank the whole night with the smell of herbature in the air.

No one was cold at the end of the night. We all took off into the cold after their encore and I think the temperature rose, just a little, in Asheville, NC. Adam and I took off in our Sprinter Van to Tennessee with ska music blasting the whole way.
