It was time for another night of my favorite comedy metal band, Psychostick. The dudes came to BackBooth in Downtown Orlando on a Thursday night while on the Nekrogoblikon tour with other supporting acts including URIZEN, Withering Earth, and Sci-Fried. Unfortunately, I was on a tight schedule that night and was only in attendance for Psychostick’s set. I’m sure all the other acts on the bill were hilariously entertaining, but the headliner of the night for me was undoubtedly The Stick.
Psychostick is the tastiest thing since Green Jello, they really are. Rawb’s lyrics are fantastically comical and realistically relatable while the music and riffs are just are captivating and moving. They opened with “Obey The Beard,” an anthem for all the fellow beardos like myself. “Dogs Like Socks” followed, which is just too hilarious to keep a straight face while listening because it’s sooo true … dogs do love socks. My dog eats mine all the time. A new song, “Adulting,” was played in a whiny angry attitude that highlights all the annoying responsibilities of growing up, such as getting up, going to work, ironing my shirt, did getting gas. We’ve all been there. And then there’s songs about sombreros and trying to steal said sombrero from the person wearing it. Check out this video of “Sombrero” from the show, thanks to The Sober Goat!
The metal riffs touch nearly every corner of every rock genre, so no style or artist is safe from the mockery. They played their solid rendition of Kenny Loggin’s “Dangerzone,” made popular in the Tom Cruise flick Top Gun. The band sported sunglasses in honor of the film.
In another tribute song, we hear various recordings of Bruce Campbell start playing, including quotes from the horror movie trilogy The Evil Dead. Other quotes come from Bruce’s fiction novel Making Love the Bruce Campbell Way, which should be noted contains no actual love advice. My favorite quote was “Once you’ve made love the Bruce Campbell way, you never go back.” One of the most outrageous songs in their catalog has got to be “NSFW” which includes only one word (starts with F) repeated several times and exclaimed in numerous ways. Check out the video of “NSFW” from the show, thanks to The Sober Goat!
They also played their most popular hit “Beer” among a mashup of other songs. But my favorite track of the night was the last song, “So Heavy,” a song that pokes fun at their favorite genre, playing on low drop tuning, show-off playing styles, and incomprehensible lyrics of many typical heavy metal songs. Psychostick … I laughed, I rocked, then I left.
