OK Go Live Review + Photos | What A Mess! | The Beacham Orlando | April 15, 2015

by • May 4, 2015

Editors Note: This is another installment of a fun new series we’re calling “Two Views,” where we put out two different writers at a show to conduct completely independent live reviews. Then, we edit the two together as a conversational piece about the show.

In this installment, Adam and Katie attend OK Go’s party at the Beacham in Orlando, FL. There was a lot of confetti. A lot. –Mitch.

Adam’s pre-show conversation:

“What show are you shooting tonight?”
“OK Go”
“Oh, the band with the treadmills?”
“YES, The band with the treadmills. But, they have other songs too. And videos. And Boy, do they have some cool videos.”

Katie: Before the show, I met up Mitch, Dainon, and Adam at Gringos Locos. There we were meeting up with ticket giveaway winners. It was cool to meet some of our fans. 🙂 Afterwards, the three of us went to The Woods because Mitch was being a fan[boy] over Zane Lamprey. [Editors note: Zane Lamprey has been my drinking teacher for almost a decade with his TV shows, Three Sheets, Drinking Made Easy, and Chug. Now he has his own brand of Rum. And, it’s delicious. (Yes Mitch edited this.)] We then headed to The Lodge where Sean and Justin met us. We had some baby beers (cutest drinks ever!) and Mitch got to challenge Zane to a chugging contest (he lost). We shot the shit for a bit until OK Go.

Adam: Known for their insanely creative and intricate music videos, OK Go graced the stage of The Beacham in Orlando on April 16,2015, something they hadn’t done in years. Lead singer, Damian Kulash, explained that it was because the last time they were in Orlando he got arrested. That would leave a bitter taste in my mouth too. Fortunately, they gave us another chance and we showed them a good time. They showed us a pretty damn good time too.

Katie: OK Go at The Beacham was a first time for me. I really didn’t know what to expect. All I know is that they have been on my list of artists that I need to see live. One reason has been because I love their music. Another reason is because I met Andy Ross (guitar/keyboards/vocals) for a hot minute at SXSW2013. I was a music panel volunteer, so I was in the green room a lot and sat in on the panel. Andy was speaking on the Activists, Rockstars & Startups: Building Movements panel, and I was intrigued with what he had to say especially having to do with OK Go. I just assumed it was going to be GOOD simply based on their game changing music videos. At the end of the night, the SIGT consensus was CONFETTI.

Adam: Since they couldn’t bring four treadmills on the road just for one song, they probably realized they would have to make up for it. And they did. The production value for their show was absolutely incredible. They started their set with a screen in front of the whole band projecting video over-top. Sure it was a photographer’s nightmare, but definitely something unique and different. The projector also showed trippy visuals on screens behind the band using live feed of video taken from miniature cameras mounted to each band member’s mic stand/instrument. Oh, and yes, they got a little trigger-happy with some confetti canons.

Katie: I loved the intro of the show with the montages of “OK’s” and “Go’s.” It was SO cool that the band performed behind a translucent screen. I was just blown away. I agree with Adam, the production value was awesome! Damian really included the audience, which was great. His storytelling and Q & A’s which led to random tangents were smart and entertaining.

Adam: Their setlist was fun and energetic, providing a positive mood for the whole night. Who can frown in a room full of confetti?! They did a beautiful job of connecting with the crowd as well. For one song, they recorded samples of audience noises to use as their drum beat. They even stopped between songs a couple times to take questions from random crowd members. They covered a range of topics including:

Q: “Do you remember me from the __________ show?”
A: No (paraphrasing)

Q: “Can I take a picture with you guys?”
A: “Sure. Turn around. You got a camera phone right?”

And a surprisingly serious question paired with a surprisingly serious answer:

Q: “How do you make your videos?”
A: “Well we spend a lot of time thinking of cool concepts. Once we know what we want it to be like, we spend even more time planning out every little detail. At that point you can’t go back on it. Then we choose to work with people who are really amazing at what they do.”

Wise words from wise guys.

Katie: My favorite parts of the show had to be when Damian came out into the crowd and sang with his acoustic (about two arm lengths away), when the guys changed into white jump suits with black-light paint on them, oh and when Mitch, Sarabeth and I hopped the barricade to get on stage for “Here It Goes Again.” Mitch and I didn’t make it up. Security stopped us. Sarabeth made it though! I told her to grab a setlist before she got off stage. And she did. Always need some kind of souvenir from a show. 🙂

Adam: My favorite part of the night was when Damian made his way into the audience with his acoustic guitar to play “Last Leaf.” He attempted to sing it without a mic but it was just a little too noisy in the packed venue. A sentimental song doesn’t sound as sweet with people yelling “Shut the f*ck up!” in the background. A mic was eventually brought to him to finish the song.

Katie: But really though, during the whole show, confetti was launched, what felt like, every other song. I know in all reality it wasn’t, but between the amount that was on the floor at the end of the night and what was falling out of my clothes when I got home, one would think differently. It was so much fun!

Adam: It wouldn’t be an OK Go set without some quirky choreographed dance moves. For their first song of the encore, a recording of “A Million Ways” played as they danced the choreography from the music video. Not a step was out of place and not a smile in the room was upside down. They capped off the night with “Skyscrapers” accompanied by Bonerama, who happened to have just finished up their show next door. And of course, “Here It Goes Again.” You know, the treadmill song.

Kaite: Being the group of co-workers and friends that we are, we decided to go next door after the show to Olde 64 and use our 64 cents drink wristbands. We had a great idea of using the photo booth. This great idea was a process though. It started it off so simple, but quickly turned into a little more than simple which allotted time for a couple more drinks. With the bar napkins, we (and by “we,” I mean Mitch) put the letters S I G T on individual napkins and OK Go on one. We decided on groups of twos–one person with each letter of SIGT and the other with the “OK Go” napkin. It was a complete mess the first time around, but the second time, we almost nailed it. Here is the proof:
