I’m just going to come right out and say it: My Morning Jacket is one of the greatest bands you’ll ever see. Perhaps you already know this and you’re like my buddy Gabe who is coming up on his 50th Jacket show. But maybe you’ve never seen them. Or maybe they accidentally snuck their way into your most recent festival experience and you didn’t even know what hit you.
That’s how I was introduced; barefoot on a blanket during a late-night set at Bonnaroo 2006. The days are long and hot at festivals like this, and I remember being ready to head back to our campsite but stopping dead in my tracks in front of That Tent because I was so drawn to the music I heard. The reclined view of lights dancing in the trees above me was welcomed, and the mesmerizing tunes carried me and the rest of the world away on a journey of the senses.
I recall saying to my friend Lily, something like,
“Damn, these guys can jam FOREVER.”
Since then they’ve become a festival staple. Not just at Bonnaroo, but all over the world. They even have their own festival in Mexico, named after one of their songs, One Big Holiday.
Lead singer and guitarist Jim James is a force to be reckoned with. Able to belt out a primal-feeling yell, and also reach high with an impressive falsetto, I promise he WILL blow your mind. I’ve seen my share of shows and never have I witnessed someone feed off his crowd so heavily. That build I mentioned? It grows and expands at the rate of the audience’s energy. And vice versa. Jim loves it. The crowd loves it. We all freaking love it.
This will be my fourth My Morning Jacket show coming up at Hard Rock Live this Tuesday, and I really can’t wait. The last time I saw them was on the “Americanarama Tour” with Wilco and Bob Dylan two years ago, and that means it’s been too long. It’s quite a love affair I have with this band. Won’t you come dance with me?
