Mariana's Trench House of Blues Orlando FL

TICKET GIVEAWAY: Mariana’s Trench w/ Mainland | House of Blues Orlando, FL | Saturday, January 23, 2016

by • January 20, 2016

Mainland is fucking great. Sorry, Dad. I know you hate my slight obsession with four-lettered words or variances thereof and I would normally start a piece with an anecdote ala “I don’t always binge a band’s whole repertoire but I when I do, it’s Mainland.” Insert 1950’s housewife grin here. But I really don’t feel like beating around the proverbial bush for these guys. (I did binge their web presence, though and what an amazingly vast, deep and wonderfully dark place the internet is.)

The NYC based band is coming up. With the likes of FADER, Noisey, Nylon, and Entertainment Weekly on their heels, they are close enough to the mainstream for an array of Google search images of artsy photo shoots to appear but obscure enough that you can casually bring them up to your friends who “only eat dairy on Sundays” and not lose your street cred. Their band page has a Tumblr-esque aesthetic minus all the nipple and boasts their vid for Outcast, also the title of their new EP since signing to 300 Entertainment in 2015.

During my (non tea-sipping) Alice in Wonderland excursion to find out more about the band, I came across a clip of Jordan Topf, lead vocalist, shedding some insight on the track and album. He explains it had a lot to do with his transition to NYC and how lonely it was at times. The confession would be absolutely eye-rolling if you didn’t actually believe him and trust me, I didn’t want to. We pride ourselves in seeking out authenticity in all aspects of our lives. If someone wreaks of faux intentions, we know, especially when it comes to music. Farbeit for me to say what you’ve been through, but forgive me if I have a hard time believing a jawline I could cut my tongue on really gave you a hard time in high school, lead singer of a wildly successful emo band. It’s well within the realm of reality that these four guys are on the outskirts peering in and their perspective is riddled with simple, well-put observances.

Their latest video for “Not As Cool As Me” is a solidified shout of their large-scale creative vision. “For this video, we strayed away from a narrative and focused on something visually liberating that would burn into your retinas like a Wes Anderson film,” Topf states in the NYLON feature, where the video premiered. Anderson would be proud. Warhol, as well. The pop-art music short doesn’t have cans of soup, but flashes images of an odd tea party, two chicks, and a couple pairs of wax lips. At one point the guys are gathered around an array of red candles, of which I can only presume is a seance of sorts to send the girl of whom they sing straight back to hell. The socio-monochromatic color scheme is pleasing and unsettling all at once. If Wednesday Addams and Adventure time creator, Pendleton Ward, ever collaborated, this would be the sick, artful spawn. It’s an anthem for the spurned and from the opening line of, “Girl, you suck,” they had me. We can try to pen down an Emily Browning way to express how we feel about breakups but in the end, it boils down to this; they suck.

Mainland recorded the EP in Los Angeles to anchor themselves to their original base of California. The record really hits its stride with the track, “A Bit Out Of Time.” It will make you want to grab your lover’s hand, barrel through the local vintage shoppe, all the while ignoring the gray cloud spelling out the eventual demise of your love and naivety. *Cue montage* Underground disco beats bump throughout the whole of Outcast and make me feel underage all over again. As if I needed another reason to don my converse from junior year covered in backstage scene paint, I do it unironically this time.

Ah, yes, the point of my sardonic drool; they’re joining Marianna’s Trench on tour and they’ll be at the House of Blues on January 23rd (WIN TICKETS BELOW). The space doesn’t exactly imbue the hippie, new wave likes of the band but let’s not be picky. I have a feeling they’re too cool presence and frank way with words will do anything but underwhelm the crowd. Consider my lip already bitten with anticipation.

Mainland House of Blues Orlando FL

There’s always a punched-in-the-gut feeling when you fervently scan the list of cities a band is touring and realize you’ve come to the bottom only to find your beloved location didn’t make the cut. This is liable to make any fan a tad salty, except when they announce a second leg of the tour. Mariana’s Trench, you tricky bastards.

The Canadian pop-rocking quartet have started out in Sacramento, CA for the extension of “THE HEY YOU GUYS!!! TOUR” and will be trekking it all the way to our Southeast shores this Saturday January 23 to crush The House of Blues (Win Tickets Below).

The band is coming off of the release of their second album, Astoria, which they name as a record based loosely around their affinity for 1980’s adventure and fantasy films. Let us all pray to the base gods that a David Bowie ‘Dance Magic Dance’ revival cover is in store. I will not apologize for anything the power of voodoo may make me do if this happens.

With all of this said, however, frontman Josh Ramsay notes that the album actually came out of a deep need to express himself during one of the most difficult times of his life. Music is an outlet. An outlet for anger, depression, joy, rage, life’s triumphs, defeat, and finding yourself at the bottom looking up, wondering where to go next. Ramsay so simply states,

This album is about completely falling to pieces, and picking yourself back up again.”

The guys think it’s their best work to date and I’m hard pressed to disagree. I don’t want to be a yes man, but yes, man this is good stuff. If you don’t take tragedy or unsatisfying circumstances and allow them to propel you into the creation of something, anything, then you will still find yourself lying on your back, stagnant. Don’t get me wrong the concrete can be comforting; cold, dependable, and probably good for back alignment but sadness makes great fucking art.

Mariana’s Trench took the worst two years of their band life together and carved out Astoria for their fans and more importantly, for themselves. Watch their “One Love” music video below and relish in the punky, wet, blue-hued hair glory of it all.

If you haven’t copped the album yet, you’ll be pleased with not only the material but the artwork. ‘Truff Shuff’ your little butt to iTunes and lick your fingers with delight at each pop wrapped track.
