Funk rock jammers The Main Squeeze rolled into Orlando to play BackBooth on a sad day in the music world, one that followed one of the most beloved herbal holidays in the world. The artist known as Prince passed away the morning of April 21st, many hearing the news as they awoke from a haze of the previous day’s festivities. The news rocked everyone in every music genre, but music is medicine, and there were shows to go to.
The Main Squeeze put on one hell of a show in a set that lasted one hour and forty-five minutes. The set opened with “Love Yourself Somebody,” followed by several more originals including “Ebaneezer,” “Dr. Funk,” “Sweat” and “Message to the Lonely” before delivering a delicious cover of “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone” by The Temptations.
A few songs later, singer Corey Frye mentions how hearing the news about Prince was a rough start to the day, but he’s thankful for music being there to pick you up in down situations. During the intro to “In a Funk,” he teases the Prince song “Kiss” with the lyrics “You don’t have to be rich, To be my girl, You don’t have to be cool, To rule my world, Ain’t no particular sign I’m more compatible with, I just want your extra time and your… Kiss.” Midway through the song they also teased “We Want the Funk” by George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic.
The set would end with a crunchy cover of Red Hot Chili Pepper’s “Give It Away” before encoring with an original tune, “I’ll Take Another (Give Me One More).” Special thanks to the whole squeeze crew including Ben “Smiley” Silverstein (Keys), Max Newman (Guitar), Corey Frye (Vocals), Rob Walker (Bass) and last but not least, Reuben Gingrich (Drums).
