[Editor’s Note: This is another installment of a fun series we call “Two Views,” where we put out two different writers at a show to conduct completely independent live reviews. In this installment, Mitch and Dainon go on two very different wild rides with The Legendary Shack Shakers, and, Mitch may or may not have eaten magic mushrooms … Read Mitch’s Legendary Trip Here. The Legendary Shack Shakers made me proud.

When they landed at Will’s Pub recently, people didn’t crowd into the space for any colossal hits. They weren’t there to see how much blood the singer would leave on the floor (at least not this time). There was a reason to be there, though, and it’s a large one at that. Fans turned up because there was a really great special on PBR Tall Boys (kidding). They really came out in droves because of what the band is able to do. And, for a few guys that have been at this song and dance routine for 20 years this year, they’ve learned a thing or 15 about how to build up a frenzy.

Legendary Shack Shakers Live Review

When you sound the trumpet long and loud to your friends about how good a band is at what it does, you end up a little relieved to get proven right. This means lead singer J.D. Wilkes kept our eyes good and glued to him all night long. When he was taking off his shirt, we egged him on. When he lit into blistering harmonica solos, we swayed and cheered. And when he had to blow a snot rocket or two out over our heads, we ducked. He was unstoppable. He did make mention of how old he was at one point, but he hardly looks like he’s added a pound or lost a hair in the last decade. This whole rocking and rolling business keeps you young, see?

Let’s just not let that display of amazing be the Shack Shakers’ swan song, please. If they’ve this much fire left, we’re going to pay to keep seeing them. We’ll show up if only to see if he’s learned how to pull an all-new face.

A friend of mine leaned over to me more than once and said it felt like we’d stepped into a David Lynch movie. Opening band The Wildtones helped create that vibe rather well. That’s not to say we didn’t like the music we both saw and heard—we loved the whole shebang—but there was something decidedly surreal and even timeless about it. So thank you, musicians. We all want more nights like that one.
