Langhorne Slim Live Review w/ The Law | The Social Orlando | October 17, 2015

by • October 26, 2015

To paraphrase Forrest Gump: I’m not a smart man, but I know what good music is. At least, I thought I did. Until Saturday night.

I’ll be the first to admit my musical taste and knowledge is pretty mainstream, at least the English variety. Being in the Shows I Go To family usually consists of someone gushing about a band coming to town or releasing a new album and me saying, “Uh, who?” Therefore it was no surprise I had never heard of the artist playing at the Social on Saturday night when my friend, Mitch, invited me to go. “Langhorne who?” I asked. “Uh, yeah, the name sounds kinda bluesy; I guess I’ll check it out.” What I was about to discover would blow my socks off and make me wonder where this music has been hiding all my life.

Langhorne Slim, I discovered, is not a man. He is not a musician nor a performer, either; he is more than that. Langhorne Slim, as it turns out, is a recipe. He is a smorgasbord of ingredients that mix together to create one crazy-ass concoction guaranteed to get you drunk on life, make you move your feet and give you the urge to sloppy kiss the person next to you. He is equal parts Jack White and Bob Dylan, with a whopping dollop of some exotic ingredient I’d never heard of before. He is passion pureed with personality, simmering on the back burner at first and then erupting into a ferocious boil you can’t help but move closer to. He is salty guitar playing mixed with sweet, well, you get the idea.

In all seriousness, Langhorne Slim left me hungry for more (I swear I’ll stop with the food metaphors). His voice was piercing and soothing at the same time, and his start/stop, loud/soft guitar playing left you guessing on when he was about to boil over again (last one). This unpredictability carried over to all aspects of his performance, daring you to take your eyes off of him for one second. While I really dug his sound, it was his stage presence that wowed me the most. He was the ultimate showman with charisma to boot. He sang a song on the floor in the middle of his adorning fans, while dancing around and holding a lady’s hand (who probably became pregnant solely due to that moment). He sang a song on the bar top; he sang a song on the stairs; he even sang a song on top of a wobbly barstool while holding on to some burly man’s shoulder for balance. Hell, I’m pretty sure he would have sang a song from the urinal in the men’s room if the microphone cord would have reached.

Langhorne Slim didn’t hide behind a guitar and a microphone. He didn’t hide behind his band, which was great, by the way! He engaged the crowd, connected with the people and looked them in the eye. He made you forget about your troubles for a while, and encouraged you to let loose and be in the moment. He told stories about his grandparents to the point you felt like you knew them personally, and he made you want to cry because of that fact when he sang “Song for Sid.”  He was real, relatable, and passionate about his craft, and that is what makes Langhorne Slim. He is unforgettable, a must-see!
