Jessie Reyez was born in Toronto, CA in 1991 to Colombian parents. She gained exposure to music as a young child as she was heavily influenced by her father who played acoustic guitar and sang Colombian boleros. As a child, she was a dedicated student and hip-hop dancer before falling into her creative self in the world of music. It wasn’t until her first serious breakup at the age of 17 in which Reyez began to create for the first time. In 2014, she was accepted into The Remix Project’s Academy of Recording Arts in Toronto where she was mentored by Daniel Daley from Dvsn, and her music was first heard by rapper King Louie. Louie and Reyez later collaborated on hit singles titled “Living in the Sky” and “It Hurts (Selena).”
In 2017 her first EP Kiddo was born under FMLY and Republic Records. Kiddo truly gained her the attention she deserves in which her single “Figures” was certified triple platinum by Music Canada, performed live at the 2017 BET awards and received one of Canada’s most honorable awards, “Breakthrough Artist” at the 2018 Juno Awards where she sang alongside Daniel Caesar.
Among many other nominations and awards Jessie Reyez has been nothing but on the rise. In 2018, she released her second album Being Human in Public. It won R&B/Soul Recording of the Year at the 2019 Juno Awards and was nominated for the Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2020 Grammy Awards. She opened for Billie Eilish on her Where Do We Go? world tour before the pandemic halted some of her future dates to perform like the 2020 Coachella Music Festival. Yet, that didn’t discourage Miss Reyez from creating! In March 2020, she released her album Before Love Came To Kill Us which has collaborations with Eminem, 6lack, Rico Nasty, and other famous rappers.
If that wasn’t enough to convince you of her talents, listen for yourself! Jessie’s newest album YESSIE was recently released and has already gained popularity among the masses. Reyez’s raw vocals alongside heartfelt lyrics combine to create soulful R&B with a Columbian twist. It is evident her passion lies with music and that she truly feels at home when she is performing.
In an interview with Billboard Magazine, Reyez talks about her new album, and previews that the album’s purpose has a lot to do with becoming stronger independently. She states that she was going to originally name the album Self due to her newfound self-discovery and ability to say “no” more. “I’ve been way more selfish than I’ve ever been in my life,” says Reyez. On the contrary, she says she has always “made music for myself” and “the fact that people resonate with it is just this beautiful, unintended byproduct. It has changed my life that people give a f*ck.”
