Even when Jason Isbell was a hard drinking rabble rouser, his songs were drenched in love and nuance. Enter sobriety, and the clear head that follows, and his compositions went from really great, classic tunes, to once or twice in a generation genius.
His brilliant, deeply personal album Southeastern catapulted him from beloved former Drive-by Trucker, to a guy about whom David Letterman once said, “I’ll tell you how much I love these people: I once drove all the way to Montana to see them play. It was tremendous.”
Southeastern is a triumph on the level of Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks or Springsteen’s Nebraska–works that elude descriptive justice. Isbell is a once in a lifetime kind of songwriter who stands out among such giants of the craft as Cory Branan and Ryan Adams. And his live show puts virtuoso guitar talents on display to compliment the vocals and songwriting that come through so vividly on record.
The other ridiculously talented songwriter playing The Plaza Live this Friday is The Hold Steady frontman, Craig Finn. The Hold Steady have provided the soundtrack for many a balls-to-the-wall night. Finn is known for sluringly enunciating songs about drunken nights, women, and gambling–songs that feature rich, charmingly flawed characters who all bear a striking resemblance to someone you know.
