Galentine’s Day 2016 Breakfast Mix // ‘Get it Gurl’

The most important holiday is about to be upon us — GALENTINE’S DAY. If you’re unfamiliar with the television show Parks and Recreation then let me break down this peak day of the year for you, Leslie Knope-style.

Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home and we just come and kick it breakfast style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s the Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.“

Ladies celebrating Ladies. And with breakfast? Hells yeah. I can think of little pleasures better in life than some quality time with my gal pals over waffles, fluffy eggs, and a tall glass of OJ. Now all you need is an overture to accompany these femme vibes and great company. Good thing it’s an amazing time for women in music.

RiRi just dropped her new album. Best Coasts’ Bethany Costentino’s article in Lenny Letter about fronting her band as a woman and the social commentary that follows is creating a good conversation on the topic of misogyny in music. Brit Pop powerhouse, Charli XCX filmed a documentary, The F-Word and Me, which follows her and her all-girl (eye roll. we hate having to say this too,) band on tour. She stops and talks to some of today’s  rockstars including, Marina and the Diamonds, Ryn Weaver, and Lizzy Plaplinger of MSMR to get their take on being in the industry.

It’s not all heavy debates and picket signs. Lest we forget the ultimate fun and empowering soundtrack of our youth that was The Spice Girls. They took on friendship, heartbreak, and aliens hand-in-hand and in knee high platforms. Their ability to create a song with both an unapologetic message of girl power and a banging beat set the tone for girl groups to come. A great song will make you feel transcendent like you could dance all night and take over the world. So it is with the utmost amount of unwavering feminine fortitude that I present to you the 2016 Galentine ‘Get it Girl’ Breakfast Mix, *(can be consumed at any meal.)

Celebrate the girl who leaves the cranberry juice out for you because she knows you need it. 

Celebrate the girl who lets you borrow her clothes and doesn’t question the state of it upon return.

Celebrate the down chick who is there at when you need to throw full beer bottles at a brick wall just to hear the noise.
