Emerging Artists: Kirov

Emerging Artists: KIROV | Playing The Copper Rocket Pub w/ Locus of Chiron on Saturday, May 14, 2016

by • May 3, 2016

Intricate arrangements intertwined flawlessly.  Thick, gravity-laden, chest-pounding riffs.  Technical expertise well beyond their years.

Orlando’s Kirov has the capacity to be recognized as one of the best bands that Orlando, and Florida as a whole, has spawned in recent times. I’ve been fortunate enough over the years to see many successful bands develop from their infancy. Frequently I even predicted their successes. (There was this little band called Trivium…) Kirov has that special something, that unnamed thing, where you can just see and hear them live and go: “Yeah, they’ve got it.” It’s exceptionally rare to see it in an instrumental band.

Drummer Loren Whitaker and guitarist Steven Schoen had been working on a project in college focused primarily on songwriting and musical production. As it would happen, when they met guitarist Jon Ashworth and bassist Kendall Lauscher, the two felt that they had enough musical common ground to form a real-life band. They did.

If asked to describe their sound, I would probably refer to it as technical, experimental metal. Although those labels don’t really do Kirov’s music justice, because there’s so much more than that.  I hear elements of djent, a la Meshuggah, Gojira, and Tesseract. There are modern prog flavors reminiscent of Porcupine Tree and straight up speed metal in the vein of Death.

I suggest you form your own opinion by listening to their single “Incursion.”  Then, go see them play Saturday, May 14th, at The Copper Rocket Pub (106 Lake Avenue, Maitland, FL 32751).

RSVP TO THE EVENT HERE!!!

Also demolishing the venue that evening will be Orlando’s alternative/90’s rock/shoegaze instrumental power-trio Audiotourism, Gainesville’s instrumental prog giants Velocirapture–who I consider to be the best band in Florida–and my progressive math-doom band Locus of Chiron. (Yeah, I’m biased.  Oh well.) 🙂

Show up if you want a mind-bending, face-melting night of insanely progressive music. And who doesn’t like a good face-melting?
