DRAKE AND MEEK MILL: ARE HIP HOP RIVALRIES RENEWED? | LISTEN TO DISS TRACKS FROM EACH ARTIST

by • July 30, 2015

For the past week, the Hip Hop world has been taken by storm by nearly nonstop coverage of the developing rift between Drake and Meek Mill. Originally started by the apparent gassing of Meek by one Funkmaster Flex (see “Wanna Know” at the bottom of this article), the one time tiff has grown into what looks like an all out beef, care of two supposed diss tracks by Drake that said to be aimed at Meek Mill.

It started with “Charged Up” (see above), and has since escalated with a freestyle found on Drake’s Soundcloud called “Back to Back” (see below). The importance of these tracks is that we’ve never really seen Drake do anything like this before. True, there was his back and forth with Common a few years ago. But even in that regard, Drake took indirect shots at the Chi town emcee, not necessarily naming him or even alluding to a problem with him on French Montana’s “Stay Schemin.”

This time around, not only has Drizzy released two alleged diss tracks in the span of a week, he seems to be making no bones about who he is referring to. Want proof? Just take a look at the cover art for the first track, “Charged Up,” featuring Drake in an all-enrapturing embrace with Meek Mill’s current boo, Nicki Minaj. It’s also not hard to decipher whom Drake is referring to when he drops a few lines about never needing a female to stick up for his career. Ouch, to say the least.

So why all of the attention that’s still surrounding this story? Why even give it credence? Why are Hip Hop and music publications of so many different kinds making such a big deal out of this? Well, it’s pretty simple. In terms of beef between large scale, mainstream rappers, neither fans, nor critics, nor industry insiders, have seen anything like this in a while. The last real and legitimate beef in Hip Hop was probably 50 Cent vs. Ja Rule. And that was just about a decade ago. And going further back than that, you have to turn your attention to Jay Z vs. Nas.

The thing is, those beefs led to good music. And at least to some degree, the beef we are witnessing now between Drake and Meek could do the same. One thing that fans always want out of these situations is good, memorable music. And save a few cool little jabs and mix tape tracks here and there, we haven’t really gotten all that much good music from Hip Hop beef in a long while. This is mainly due to the way social media lets any and everyone air each other out, especially rappers. Why make a 2 to 3-minute diss track when you can simply hop on Instagram and Twitter and throw shots at your opponent in a few pictures, videos, and 140 characters or less?

So, has the Drake/Meek Mill situation re-ignited the real competitive spirit and energy of the Hip Hop beef? Well, we can’t say just yet, mainly because Meek Mill is yet to respond. But at the very least, it has our attention for a time. Here’s hoping that it stays on records and gives us some memorable moments in Hip Hop music.
