Dinosaur Jr. | Coming to Irving Plaza, NYC | Wednesday & Thursday, November 30 & December 1, 2016

by • November 28, 2016

What do you call one of the most influential three-piece bands of the past 40 years? The eclectic, ultrasonic, masterful Dinosaur Jr. These alt-rockers have a sound that is completely their own, with every song containing 3-4 different genres of music! They are bringing their brand of amazing to Irving Plaza in New York City for two days, November 30 and December 1, and you definitely need to go check them out!

Formed in 1984 out of the hardcore scene in Massachusetts, Dinosaur Jr. consists of members J. Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph (yes, his name is Murph). The idea for the band came about after J. was introduced to 60’s and 70’s psychedelic rock. He decided to start playing his own version of that kind of music, along with the speed metal of the hardcore bands that he had been playing with before. What came out of it was some of the most interesting alternative rock I have ever heard, and the band began to make impressions. After some tours and an album, Sonic Youth invited them on tour, and the ball began to roll from there. What followed was an explosion in their popularity as they rode the rise of alternative music in the 1980’s and 1990’s, releasing six critically acclaimed albums.

After a breakup in 1997, Dinosaur Jr. returned in 2005 with the original lineup and continued to release more material. They gained exposure to a new group of listeners when their song “Feel The Pain” was featured on the hit video games Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Since then, the band has been touring almost non-stop, releasing albums and generally kicking ass at life. You can hear their influences in many modern day bands, including Band of Horses,  Arcade Fire, ThePixies, Nirvana, and even The Gaslight Anthem. Any of Dinosaur Jr.’s songs can jump from noise rock to country to grunge to hardcore punk, and every song has the ability to elevate you to another level of sonic enjoyment.

Definitely jump at any chance you have to see this band! It’s making this writer really wish he was up in New York to see them himself!
