Deftones Live Review

“an affinity for diversity.” | Deftones Live Review & Photos| House of Blues Orlando, FL | May 14, 2016

I had missed Deftones the last two times they come to Orlando due to schedule conflicts, but the calendar was all go this time for their sold-out show at House of Blues in Orlando. My last Deftones show was at the 311 Pow Wow Festival at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida in August 2011. That set was incredible, and I filmed all of it, which you can check out below.

I’ve been a Deftones fan since around 1997 when they released their second album Around the Fur, which is probably still my favorite album. Their latest release and eighth studio album GORE undoubtedly is vastly different compared to their early stuff, but Deftones always sound like Deftones and nobody else. The new album is unified and has feelings of a troubled new-wave hangover that is bursting with beautiful rage and dark doom riffs. Their sound has certainly tweaked and evolved since then, but I’ve always loved the different adaptations they took their capacity to. I also really got a kick out of what their name means: a combination of the hip hop slang term “def” with the suffix “-tones” which was popular among older bands. The vague name intends to reflect their affinity for diversity.

Needless to say, they did an awesome job at this show. I’m blown away every time by how great they sound live. The beautiful crowd and the rolling sea of people on the floor being squished like a tube of toothpaste, everyone in tune, all looking out for each other, together as one. Chino sounded superb and stepped up several times on the monitors and platforms forethought the show, even venturing down to the front of the crowd on the floor to rock their faces. They never disappoint.

I got the song I came for just two songs in, “My Own Summer (Shove It).” Yes, from Around the Fur and one of their biggest old school hits — super original — but that shit’s my jam, yo. Fuck it. Other notable favorites from the all-encompassing setlist that really tickled my fancy were “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away),” “You’ve Seen The Butcher?,” “Digital Bath,” “Knife Party,” “Change (In The House Of Flies),” and the encore was just too delicious: “Root” & “Engine No. 9.” Yes those are all older tunes, but that’s just what I like more, simple as that. And they delivered lots of old stuff. So much that I overheard someone talking about the lack of GORE related tracks being played on tour supporting the album. Be that as it may, I thorougholy enjoyed “Prayers/Triangles” off the new album. I also wouldn’t have traded any songs they chose to grace us with for any others. Thank you for rocking my face, Deftones.
