Not to get completely kumbaya right off the bat or anything but, were Chris Robinson to create a commune, every single one of us would be invited. No soul would be turned away or left behind. He’d want us there. He’d be waving us in, handing out big grins and hugs. We’d want to sell all our belongings and move there forever. And it would be a grand adventure of a life, filled with the happiest of days and songs that never ended.
That’s the kind of vibe I got last Saturday anyway. And I was hardly the only one. When he and his band of bearded merry-makers (The Chris Robinson Brotherhood) stopped off in Orlando to show us some of what they’re made of, we were treated to two-and-a-half hours of the good stuff.
Chris was in incredible form, sounding every bit as good (better?) as he ever did fronting the Black Crowes. This newish Brotherhood allows him to lean hard into some Grateful Dead jam territory, songs easily stretching into the 10-minutes-or-more lengths, but that’s a good thing. The music the band is putting out feels easy and natural and right. Instead of one voice, there are three. Combine that with all the other players (and some pretty serious keyboards) and it was really pretty spectacular to witness.
On stage, Chris performed barefoot. A plastic owl nearby had a small chimney of incense smoke constantly billowing out its top. Dialogue was kept to a very bare minimum, but they were as appreciative on stage as the mid-sized (thrilled crowd) below. You saw it in their faces. They sang and played and we cheered and cheered. They played longer and louder and we did all we could to go hoarse cheering our gratitude in return.
And, wouldn’t you know it, but the band was selling its own beverage at the bar, a beer brewed in connection with Anchor Brewing named, simply enough, Brotherhood Steam. They really did think this all through. Everything was in its right place.

Did I want to hear a crazy extended version of “Remedy” or “She Talks To Angels” or even “Bad Luck Blue Eyes Goodbye” that night? Hell yes, I did! But the band made it abundantly clear that they’re doing their own thing now. The Black Crowes certainly catapulted their singer into rock stardom, but that was then. So begins this chapter. This is new. This is the new stuff that borrows plenty of the old.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
