Cherub On Tour

Getting To Know: Cherub | The Beacham (Orlando) & Culture Room (Fort Lauderdale)

by • November 10, 2016

Doses and mimosas, champagne and cocaine, help to get me through.”

These are lyrics that people always sing in harmony at the top of their lungs at college house parties. Everyone shares a sense of familiarity toward the song “Doses and Mimosas,” but the group behind the track is what is undoubtedly extraordinary.

Cherub, an electro-pop band from Nashville currently on their “Bleed Gold Piss Excellence” tour, finally made it to The Beacham in downtown Orlando in late September. Boo Seeka and Frenship both opened for the band; despite the dissimilarity, Frenship’s beachy, light-hearted tracks seemed to complement the down-tempo electronic sounds of Boo Seeka’s live performance.

The pre-concert guilt of only knowing a handful of Cherub’s songs left me feeling heaps of both curiosity and anticipation. Little did I know, it was going to develop into one of the most spontaneous weekends that I’ve had in a while. Jordan Kelley and Jason Huber, the dual talents behind Cherub, exhibited their multi-faceted musical abilities by incorporating drums, bass, and synths into their set. Things got really funky once Kelley implemented a talk-box into a few songs, which in return initiated a massive impromptu dance circle amid the fore of the crowd.

Cherub fans are no joke. They are boisterous boogie machines that show their devotion by singing along to each lyric and overflowing the atmosphere with positivity and love. Songs like “XOXO,” “Disco Shit,” and “Doses and Mimosas” were the leading shimmy songs, while “Freaky Me, Freaky You” and “Signs” served as chilled-out head-bopping tunes.

My weekend on a whim didn’t begin until after the concert, when a comment that a friend of mine made about Kelley’s socks at the merch table resulted in friendly conversation. This led to an impulse decision to attend Cherub’s show in Fort Lauderdale the following night. The itinerary for night number two began with a three-hour road trip and finished with a large hang out session with everyone from the show at an Irish pub called Kelly Brothers, which Kelley deemed to be one of his favorite bar in South Florida (no coincidence).

Beyond the multiple sound checks and herd of screaming girls, Jordan Kelley and Jason Huber are just a couple of normal, down-to-earth guys. After spending the weekend with the pair, Kelley stated that he tries to acknowledge the fans who are genuine and appreciative. The duo complements each other well — although both possess naturally energetic personalities, the boys tend to have a certain yin and yang factor to them. It’s obvious when Jordan rocks out to death metal bands during his free time — he likes Baby Metal — while Jason will occasionally sport a Taylor Swift tee and a happy-go-lucky quirk at all times. On stage, they come off as rockstars. But in the end, they’re just looking to have a good time and make new friends.

Cherub performed more songs from their new album Bleed Gold Piss Excellence at the Fort Lauderdale show to hype fans up for the new project. It would be unfair to compare the two shows after witnessing the combination of vocals and instrumentals that the band can execute. Cherub’s diverse sound can be categorized under an array of genres that might range from electronic, pop, and even a smidgen of hip hop and indie. Kelley and Huber are pretty cool guys, but together, they emanate a spirited onstage energy that allows people to connect with them on a personal level.

Cherub will be the next big thing. With their knack for producing outstanding music, success is inevitable. Oh, and they’re also huge fans of Shows I Go To.
