bring me the horizon live review

Bring Me The Horizon Live Review | Hard Rock Live, Orlando, Fl | Thursday, October 1, 2015

Oh man, what a night! I got to go see Bring Me The Horizon play the first night of their US tour to a sold out crowd at Hard Rock Live. As I got to the venue, I could hear PVRIS finishing up inside. I got my ticket and waited for my friend, and Shows I Go To Director of Publicity, Katie Baldwin to arrive so we could get ourselves in. After passing through security, Katie and I got ourselves a drink, found our spot (middle of the first floor, overlooking the pit and in front of the bar), and got ourselves psyched for the amazing show that was about to happen.

Since we had missed PVRIS, Katie and I only got to see the other opener, Issues. This was my second time seeing them, but for the life of me, I cannot remember when (blame it on the alcohol). Anyways, I really dug a couple of things about the band, especially their stage presence. There were five of them. Every member except Josh, who was stuck behind his drum kit, really used the stage as their playground. Their back drop/set pieces was set up like either an English Pub, or a bar out of Minnesota. Moose head on one piece, beer signs on another, and a big Issues sign in the middle done in neon lights. Another clue that this band was not fucking around.

OK, time to talk about the best part, the music. I’ve been out of the metalcore scene for a while now, but Issues reminded me why I was a fan in the first place. Total energy, chugging riffs, the double kick pedals and the balance of screaming and singing. These guys were fantastic in all parts of each song, they looked like they were having fun doing it, and they got the crowd singing along with every song. They even played a new song off of their new album, which the crowd really seemed to love. Great band, and an excellent choice to open for Bring Me The Horizon.

Finally, it came time for the big act, the main show, the top dawg to start. Allow me set the stage for you: a light display positioned behind the band, with the drum kit and synth/keyboard set set on opposite sides of the stage. The lights went out, and the band came out onstage. Let me tell you what, that light display was pretty amazing. Projected lyrics, images, and just other random trippy colors danced around to the music. With the lights going, the band itself barely ever had the house lights on on themselves, which, combined with the right amount of fog, gave the band members a very cool shadowlike ethereal effect.

Then they started playing. Bring Me The Horizon’s set list was pretty well rounded. “Chelsea Smile” was probably their biggest sound difference because it was the oldest song that they played. The crowd was really loving it, launching into wall of death as the breakdown finished. It’s not often you get to see that in a bigger venue like the Hard Rock, so when I saw everyone line up, I got pretty excited. After finishing “Sleepwalking,” lead singer Oli Hebert looked into the crowd and said:

Let’s tear this venue a new fucking arsehole.”

The band launched into “Antivist,” and the crowd erupted. There was a giant mosh pit, another wall of death, and, probably my favorite part of the show, a huge screen with “CUNT” emblazoned on it in giant letters. It’s a part of the song, but still, its not often you get to see that word here in the US. After “Antivist”, the band left the stage, leaving all the fans literally screaming their heads off for an encore. After not even 7 minutes, the band came back onstage, thanked us for an excellent start of the tour, and began their encore with another new song, “True Friends.” “Blessed With A Curse” came next, coming off of my favorite album of BMTH’s, There Is A Hell, Believe Me I’ve Seen It, There Is A Heaven, Let’s Keep It A Secret, and for the most part, the crowd sung along. Oli again thanked us for making tonight memorable, and the band began their last song, “Drown.”

All in all, this was a pretty special night for me. Bring Me The Horizon is one of those bands that really have pulled a David Bowie, being able to constantly reimagine themselves through each album. Every fan I saw that night knew all of the words, danced like their lives depended on it, and had the biggest smile on their face when it was all over. I was no different. Bring Me The Horizon is something amazing, a true tour de force. When the show is all over, you feel the hole in your chest that this band just filled. I hope many of you got to see them, and if you didn’t, I hope I’ll see you at their next show! You will never regret it.
