If anything can be said for Anthony Raneri of Bayside, it’s that both his solo work and band are blowing up the alt-rock scene. As a Bayside founding member, Raneri brings one of Bayside’s defining qualities–his haunting vocals and penchant lyricism–to center stage in a solo tour, stopping in Orlando, FL on Saturday, July 11, 2015 (win tickets below).
Among the note-worthy fronters gone solo, Raneri focused his Bayside free time on his own DIY project, honing his interest from initial acoustic, to a refined, full band-backed act.
His 2012 release, “New Cathedrals,” oozes a very Bayside-y vibe, but instead, it’s Raneri’s processing and ownership of a tumultuous year. In five songs, he divulges listeners in a way that expresses an intimacy with the performer, in spite of the full-blown band backing.
Intimacy is exactly what to expect in a performance, at least as far as connecting to the sound itself goes. Just check out this acoustic set from Warped Tour 2014:
With the hyper-focus in Raneri’s talent as a vocalist, it’s just a pure blend with the timbre of the acoustic guitar. I’m immediately entranced.
Tagging along on tour with Raneri is Chad Gilbert, known for his spot in New Found Glory, who has also divulged another layer of music in solo act, What’s Eating Gilbert. Inspired by ’50s and ’60s power pop, gives off a rockabilly vibe that incites the same nostalgia he claims close to his own heart. It’s definitely a different flavor from NFG, but it’s catchy and classic in a way that fans adore. Don’t worry– there’s plenty of pop-punk spice in Gilbert’s act, too.
As far as openers go, Allison Weiss is a gem performer who draws audience members close as if divulging life experiences like secrets. The first time I heard “Making It Up,” I instantly connected with Weiss–it was as if she knew every potential heartache and laid them out for us to share. By the end of her songs, it’s like connecting with close friend.
I can’t pick a favorite of this trio (Okay, maybe Weiss. Only because I’ve missed her too many times now!). But, really, all of these performers are stellar- and you won’t want to miss them.
